The new year always makes me think about a clean slate and I often my find myself doing some sort of reorganization or design project in January. This time it was our living room. This project has been a long time coming; we’ve been discussing what we want since we moved in almost two years ago! Problem was, Hubs and I both love mid-century modern style chairs, but couldn’t find the right style under $750-$1000 per chair. Given we have young nieces, nephews and a cat around we weren’t willing to make that investment. I hate the concept of owning furniture you can’t enjoy. Enter the Ikea hack!
Living Room Chairs
The Mellby chair has the perfect mid-century lines, but the chrome legs were way too contemporary for our home. So I did some digging and found this site, Pretty Pegs, that sells legs to customize your Ikea furniture. They have legs for every type of furniture, to fit any style and the quality is amazing! Best part is I just screwed them right into the chair where the Ikea legs would go – no muss no fuss. I picked up a couple of these sheepskin rugs to toss over the chair backs and really complete the vibe.
Record Player Stand
While we were dealing with the chair issue we had a brainwave. I got Hubs a record player and records for his birthday this year, and until last week the record player lived on a little side table with the records stacked in a pile next to it. It was messy and a pain, but again we couldn’t find a piece of furniture that worked. Ikea now offers the classic Kallax (which is perfect record size by the way) in a cool high-gloss blue. We ran up to the sofa section, picked out some funky peg legs in a washed wood and drilled those puppies in. Ta-da! The Kallax – elevated (get it?!).
I love doing refreshes to our place, and getting my hands dirty with a good furniture revamp always brings me joy – got any great furniture DIY ideas? Leave them in the comments below!
